About templates found at the sites below

Many of the templates are not true Excel templates.  Their file type is typically XLS, which indicates they are a workbook.  However, the data fields in them have not been filled in, so in that sense they are a type of template.  The quality of the templates very from very good to very bad.  Free templates have little to no support.  Many of the free templates are designed to convince you to purchase the commercial version to get additional features.  Support is typically email only.  Refund policies typically state no refund, so if you buy, you may have a battle to get your money back.

Workbook and template sites:

At the Microsoft Template Gallery, you can find hundreds of free templates.  We have used a number of them.  We have found some approaches that make finding templates on this site easier. Before going to the gallery, please review our gallery tips..  If you are after a simple template, this is a good place to go.  For more complex templates, you most likely will need to purchase or create what you need.

Vertex42 has many free templates and sample workbooks.  They also have commercial versions with more features or that are not worksheet password protected.  The free ones we have tried are not true Excel templates.  Their file type is XLS so they are actually workbooks.  If you want to save a download as a template, which allows you to create new files using it as a template, do a Save As and change the type to template.  What we like about Vertex is the ease of viewing the available templates versus Office Gallery.

Excel Templates has a large set of templates and sample workbooks.  Navigation is by the right side of the page.  It is difficult to spot a particular template as there are no short summary by template like at Vertex.  However, they do have a site search feature. Many are not true templates but workbooks that you can fill in and use.

The Spreadsheet Store has a fair number of Excel business related templates. All appear to have to be purchased and thus are not free.

Business Spreadsheets provides Excel templates that for financial analysis and business decision making scenarios. All Excel templates function with Microsoft Excel 97 or higher.  Most appear to be for sale versus for free.

Spreadsheet123 has quite a free Excel templates.  However, their site appears to be extremely ad supported.  We personally don't like the ads and avoid the site.  But, it may have what you want and be worth the pain of the ads. Our recommendation if you visit:  Size the window so you don't see the ads on the right side.

How to delete or rename an Excel template from your PC - Especially useful if the template is poorly named or you have too many templates.
