Installation Help

General

All of our add-ins are installed via EXE's.  They offer you several installation methods including a complete manual install and an automatic install as illustrated by the following video from one of our installs:

Install Video (Flash) Install Video (WMV)

Only a few of the add-ins are automatically opened when Excel opens.  We instead use a small add-in called an add-in manager to open the add-ins when you need them.  The add-in displays a selection list when you click on its toolbar button:

In Excel 2007, this button is on the the Add-ins tab.  For other Excel releases, this toolbar is free floating and can be moved to the toolbar area by dragging and dropping.

If you find that you are using one of the add-ins quite often, you can have the add-in manager install the add-in as a auto-opening add-in so it opens automatically when you open Excel.

I can't figure out how to open the product I just installed.  What do I do?

In Excel, you should see a button that looks like the following: .  Click on it, find the product you want to open in the list, select it, and then click on the Open button.  The books on macros are located at the bottom of the list.

If you are using Excel 2007, the above button is on the Add-ins Tab.

If you can't find the above button, do the following (Excel 97-2003):

  • Select View, Toolbars, Customize
  • In the dialog that appears, select the first tab
  • Find the add-in manager toolbar in the list.  Then click the checkbox off and on rapidly many times.  You will see the toolbar flash on and off!  If you have dual monitors, most likely it is appearing in the monitor you are not looking at.

If the add-in manager is not listed or for Excel 2007 users on the Add-ins tab, then re-run the install.  If that doesn't work, do the following:

  • Excel 97-2003 users: Select Tools, Add-ins
  • Excel 2007 users:  Click the Office button, Excel Options, Add-ins, select Manage Microsoft Excel add-ins in the drop down list, and click Go.
  • If the add-in manager is in the dialog list that appears, click it on
  • If it is not in the list, then click the browse button, go to c:\program files\add-ins (this is not the addins directory)
  • Select just the file addinmgr.xla
  • Click OKs, and click on its check box, and click OKs to close the dialogs.

My download didn't work or was interrupted. What do I do?

At the completion of your order, a page with a download link immediately appears.  You also will receive an e-mail which will take you back to this page.  Just open the e-mail and click on this link. I bought a new computer and need to install the add-ins from my old machine to my new machine.  What do I do?

The best way is to run the EXE you received when you purchased. If you do not have, we offer free replacement for a year and a half price upgrade to the latest version if more than a year. If you do not have the EXE, then you can copy the files in C:\Program Files\Add-Ins to the the new computer.  However, the upgrades will not recognize your copy if you do so. The next step is to open Excel and select Tools, Add-ins, and click on the Browse button.  Locate the following files and click on them.  You may not have them all, as you may have purchased only one product.  Do not click on all the XLA's.  Most are loaded only through the Add-in Manager, a small add-in that is loaded all the time.  This way, you only load them when they are needed.

XLA to load For Add-in Product
addinmgr.xla Add-In Manager - opens all add-ins
assistnt.xla Spreadsheet Assistant
backup assistant.xla   Backup Assistant
colorassistant.xla   Cell Color Assistant
File assistant.xla File Assistant
filtasst.xla Filter Assistant
pvtassnt.xla Pivot Table Assistant
prntasst.xla Print Assistant
sheetnav.xla Sheet Navigator

If the product you have is not listed above, then install only addinmgr.xla via the Browse button. The Add-in Manager adds a button that opens any of the add-ins when needed.  On older versions, it adds a menu item to the Tools menu to open the add-ins.

How do I un-install  or re-install an add-in?

To un-install, select Tools, Add-ins, and un-check the add-in you wish to un-install.  To re-install, select Tools, Add-ins, and check the add-in.  If the add-in is not listed, follow the instructions in the previous FAQ.

How do I un-install the book on Time Saving Solutions?

Select Tools, Add-ins, and un-check the Add-ins.com Add-in Manager.  Please note that the add-in manager may be needed to give you access to many of our other products, and should not be un-installed.  It is a very small add-in and just adds its menu item to the Tools menu.  The book is never loaded into memory, thus it does not need to be un-installed.

I've run the install, but the menu additions disappear when I close and re-open Excel, what do I do?

There are a number of causes of this.  Each has a different cure.

The most likely cause is a corrupt XLB file.  This file is maintained by Excel, and is where all toolbar and menu customizations are stored.  Each version of Excel stores this file in a different location.  To solve, first close Excel.  Then search your PC for all files with a file type of XLB.  It is a hidden file, so you will need to change the advanced search options to search for hidden files. You should also uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" in Explorer's Tools, Options, View so that you can see file types. Rename all XLB files you find.  Then restart Excel.  Excel will recreate a new XLB file and this should solve.

If the above does not solve, then the installation of Office is most likely corrupt.  To fix, run the repair option of Microsoft Office found in Add/Remove Programs. If this does not solve, un-installing Office, reboot, and re-install.
